A seasonal study on the occurrence and distribution of total aerobic microbial population (TMP), total aerobic heterotrophic bacteria (THB), actinomycetes and fungi in the sediments of Vellar Estuary, South India (11 degree 29'N 79 degree 46'E) was carried out during Jan. to Dec. 1975. Sediment samples were collected at monthly intervals, from 4 stations and analysed microbiologically. In general, bacterial population was found to be dominant followed by actinomycetes and fungi. The max peak for TMP, THB and fungi were recorded in Nov. in all stations. Monsoon season supported TMP, THB and fungi to a high level and it was summer for actinomycetes. Statistical analysis (Kendall's tau) showed a significantly positive correlation among TMP, THB, actinomycetes... |

The main photosynthesis and respiration parameters (dark respiration rate, light saturated production rate, saturation irradiance, photosynthetic efficiency) were measured on a total of 23 macrophytes of the Than lagoon (2 Phanerogams, 5 Chlorophyceae, 10 Rhodophyceae and 6 Phaeophyceae). Those measurements were performed in vitro under controlled conditions, close to the natural ones, and at several seasons. Concomitantly, measurements of pigment concentrations, carbon, phosphorous and nitrogen contents in tissues were performed. Seasonal intra-specific variability of photosynthetic parameters was found very high, enlightening an important acclimatation capacity. The highest photosynthetic capacities were found for Chlorophyceae (e.g. Monostroma obscurum... |

This study is based on eight research cruises carried out on the bonny river system from December 1986-september 1988. Variations in some physico-chemical parameters of water [Transparency, temperature, pH, DO, salinity, conductivity, PO4, NH4 SiO2 and alkalinity] observed at 10 stations located in the main channel of the river are presented. Results showed that salinity, conductivity, pH, DO, and alkalinity exhibited spatial and temporal variations. In general, the upper estuary was slightly acidic while the middle and lower estuary were alkaline .A slight decrease in water temperature with depth was observed in most of the stations. The amplitude of variation in surface and bottom water temperature was generally between 0.5-2oC. Significant salinity... |

Short term changes in zooplankton community were investigated at a fixed station in offshore waters of the Ligurian Sea (DYNAPROC 2 cruise, September-October 2004). Mesozooplankton were sampled with vertical WPII hauls (200 mu m mesh-size) and large mesozooplankton, macrozooplankton and micronekton with a BIONESS multinet sampler (500 mu m mesh-size). Temporal variations of total biomass, species composition and abundance of major taxa were studied. Intrusions of low salinity water masses were observed two times during the cruise. The first one, which was the most intense, was associated with changes in zooplankton community composition. Among copepods, the abundance of Calocalanus, Euchaeta, Heterorhabdus, Mesocalanus, Nannocalanus, Neocalanus,... |

We examined the relationships between environmental variations in lotic ecosystems with the seasonal dynamics of macroalgae communities at different spatial scales: drainage basin of two rivers (Rio das Pedras and Rio Marrecas), shading (open and shaded stream segments), mesohabitat (riffles and pools), and microhabitats. Data collections were made on a monthly basis between January and December/2007. A total of 16 taxa were encountered (13 species and 3 vegetative groups). All of the biotic parameters (richness, abundance, diversity, equitability, and dominance) were found to be highly variable at all of the spatial scales evaluated. On the other hand, abiotic variables demonstrated differences only at mesohabitat (in terms of current velocity) and shaded... |

The reproductive cycle, as well as its nutrient storage and utilization, of two populations of Ruditapes decussatus from the main production areas of this species: Ria de Aveiro and Ria Formosa Lagoon (Portugal) were studied here over a 24 month period (May 2010-April 2012). The reproductive cycle of both populations of R. decussatus followed an annual cyclicality that comprised a ripe stage in spring followed by a spawning period that began in late spring and extended throughout summer until early autumn. This extended and continuous spawning period may be an advantageous strategy for this species by ensuring a continuous supply of gametes. Moreover, R. decussatus can adopt different reproductive strategies depending on the geographical origin. The... |

In order to estimate energetic relationship, microphytic and benthic bivalve levels of a shallow (1.5 m), sandy ecosystem near Marseille (Gulf of Fos, Southern France) were sampled monthly during 1.5 year, in two sites differing by their wave exposure. In the sheltered area, the bivalve Ruditapes decussatus was the dominant species, while another bivalve, Donax trunculus , was found in the open, wave exposed site. Chlorophyll a and primary production of the phytoplankton and the microphytobenthos, as well as population dynamic, growth and biochemical composition of bivalves (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates) were monitored. |

Researchers often use metabolic measurements in the field over narrow time periods to estimate an organism's metabolism over large time scales. Here, we measured in situ respiration, calcification and excretion rates of the tropical gastropod Tectus niloticus L. through benthic chamber experiments. Our samples spanned a 21 h time frame and were taken during both the warm and cool seasons. We assessed diel and seasonal variability in metabolic rates, as well as the effect of individual size and the contribution of shell epi-and endobionts. Our results show that metabolic rates vary through time at both diel and seasonal scales, as measured fluxes for respiration and calcification were significantly higher at night during the warm season. This nocturnal... |
