Seasonal variation of microbial population from sediments of Vellar Estuary, South India. ArchiMer
Lakshmanaperumalsamy, P; Chandramohan, D; Natarajan, R.
A seasonal study on the occurrence and distribution of total aerobic microbial population (TMP), total aerobic heterotrophic bacteria (THB), actinomycetes and fungi in the sediments of Vellar Estuary, South India (11 degree 29'N 79 degree 46'E) was carried out during Jan. to Dec. 1975. Sediment samples were collected at monthly intervals, from 4 stations and analysed microbiologically. In general, bacterial population was found to be dominant followed by actinomycetes and fungi. The max peak for TMP, THB and fungi were recorded in Nov. in all stations. Monsoon season supported TMP, THB and fungi to a high level and it was summer for actinomycetes. Statistical analysis (Kendall's tau) showed a significantly positive correlation among TMP, THB, actinomycetes...

Seasonal variations in photosynthetic irradiance response curves of macrophytes from a Mediterranean coastal lagoon ArchiMer
Plus, Martin; Auby, Isabelle; Verlaque, Marc; Levavasseur, Guy.
The main photosynthesis and respiration parameters (dark respiration rate, light saturated production rate, saturation irradiance, photosynthetic efficiency) were measured on a total of 23 macrophytes of the Than lagoon (2 Phanerogams, 5 Chlorophyceae, 10 Rhodophyceae and 6 Phaeophyceae). Those measurements were performed in vitro under controlled conditions, close to the natural ones, and at several seasons. Concomitantly, measurements of pigment concentrations, carbon, phosphorous and nitrogen contents in tissues were performed. Seasonal intra-specific variability of photosynthetic parameters was found very high, enlightening an important acclimatation capacity. The highest photosynthetic capacities were found for Chlorophyceae (e.g. Monostroma obscurum...

Seasonal variations in the heterologous binding of viscacha spermatozoa: A scanning electron microscope study Biocell
Aguilera Merlo,Claudia; Muñoz,Estela; Dominguez,Susana; Fóscolo,Mabel; Scardapane,Luis; de Rosas,Juan Carlos.
Seasonal changes in the reproductive activity of the adult male viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus) were investigated during the annual reproductive cycle. Assays of heterologous in vitro binding between compatible gametes were used to evaluate the ability of viscacha spermatozoa to achieve primary binding during its annual reproductive cycle. Sperm were collected by mincing cauda epididymis in HECM-3 medium and the sperm concentration and motility were evaluated. Cumulus-free and zona-free oocytes obtained from superovulated hamsters were inseminated in vitro with capacitated sperm suspensions, incubated at 37ºC, 5% CO2 for 3 h, and then processed for studies by scanning electronic microscopy. Statistical analysis was used to compare the quantitative...

Short term changes in zooplankton community during the summer-autumn transition in the open NW Mediterranean Sea: species composition, abundance and diversity ArchiMer
Raybaud, V.; Nival, P.; Mousseau, L.; Gubanova, A.; Altukhov, D.; Khvorov, S.; Ibanez, F.; Andersen, V..
Short term changes in zooplankton community were investigated at a fixed station in offshore waters of the Ligurian Sea (DYNAPROC 2 cruise, September-October 2004). Mesozooplankton were sampled with vertical WPII hauls (200 mu m mesh-size) and large mesozooplankton, macrozooplankton and micronekton with a BIONESS multinet sampler (500 mu m mesh-size). Temporal variations of total biomass, species composition and abundance of major taxa were studied. Intrusions of low salinity water masses were observed two times during the cruise. The first one, which was the most intense, was associated with changes in zooplankton community composition. Among copepods, the abundance of Calocalanus, Euchaeta, Heterorhabdus, Mesocalanus, Nannocalanus, Neocalanus,...

Spatial variations at different observational scales and the seasonal distributions of stream macroalgae in a Brazilian subtropical region Rev. Bras. Bot.
Krupek,Rogério Antonio; Branco,Ciro Cesar Zanini; Peres,Cleto Kaveski.
We examined the relationships between environmental variations in lotic ecosystems with the seasonal dynamics of macroalgae communities at different spatial scales: drainage basin of two rivers (Rio das Pedras and Rio Marrecas), shading (open and shaded stream segments), mesohabitat (riffles and pools), and microhabitats. Data collections were made on a monthly basis between January and December/2007. A total of 16 taxa were encountered (13 species and 3 vegetative groups). All of the biotic parameters (richness, abundance, diversity, equitability, and dominance) were found to be highly variable at all of the spatial scales evaluated. On the other hand, abiotic variables demonstrated differences only at mesohabitat (in terms of current velocity) and shaded...

The reproductive cycle of the European clam Ruditapes decussatus (L., 1758) in two Portuguese populations: Implications for management and aquaculture programs ArchiMer
Matias, Domitilia; Joaquim, Sandra; Matias, Ana Margarete; Moura, Paula; Sousa, Joana; Sobral, Paula; Leitao, Alexandra.
The reproductive cycle, as well as its nutrient storage and utilization, of two populations of Ruditapes decussatus from the main production areas of this species: Ria de Aveiro and Ria Formosa Lagoon (Portugal) were studied here over a 24 month period (May 2010-April 2012). The reproductive cycle of both populations of R. decussatus followed an annual cyclicality that comprised a ripe stage in spring followed by a spawning period that began in late spring and extended throughout summer until early autumn. This extended and continuous spawning period may be an advantageous strategy for this species by ensuring a continuous supply of gametes. Moreover, R. decussatus can adopt different reproductive strategies depending on the geographical origin. The...

Towards the development of environmental indices for the Namibian shelf, with particular reference to fisheries management. OceanDocs
Bartholomae, Ch.; Van der Plas, A..
The Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has the task of collecting and providing relevant oceanographic information for management of their fisheries. However, quality information is difficult to provide because of the complexity of the processes involved in the Namibian marine ecosystem. Nonetheless, there are oceanographic data available that can contribute to fisheries management by improving the general understanding of important oceanographic processes related to fisheries. The focus of this paper is on the development of simple environmental indices that can serve as a measurement or proxy of the state or intensity of certain important oceanographic processes or variables for temporal comparison. These indices relate to oceanographic...

Trophic relationships between benthic or planktonic microphytes and infaunal bivalve molluscs ArchiMer
Plantecuny, M; Bodoy, Alain.
In order to estimate energetic relationship, microphytic and benthic bivalve levels of a shallow (1.5 m), sandy ecosystem near Marseille (Gulf of Fos, Southern France) were sampled monthly during 1.5 year, in two sites differing by their wave exposure. In the sheltered area, the bivalve Ruditapes decussatus was the dominant species, while another bivalve, Donax trunculus , was found in the open, wave exposed site. Chlorophyll a and primary production of the phytoplankton and the microphytobenthos, as well as population dynamic, growth and biochemical composition of bivalves (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates) were monitored.

Variability in diel and seasonal in situ metabolism of the tropical gastropod Tectus niloticus ArchiMer
Lorrain, A.; Clavier, J.; Thebault, J.; Tremblay-boyer, L.; Houlbreque, F.; Amice, E.; Le Goff, M.; Chauvaud, L..
Researchers often use metabolic measurements in the field over narrow time periods to estimate an organism's metabolism over large time scales. Here, we measured in situ respiration, calcification and excretion rates of the tropical gastropod Tectus niloticus L. through benthic chamber experiments. Our samples spanned a 21 h time frame and were taken during both the warm and cool seasons. We assessed diel and seasonal variability in metabolic rates, as well as the effect of individual size and the contribution of shell epi-and endobionts. Our results show that metabolic rates vary through time at both diel and seasonal scales, as measured fluxes for respiration and calcification were significantly higher at night during the warm season. This nocturnal...
